We finally are getting a break from the weather. Fishing is getting better by the day. The water in most of the lagoon is clear. This has allowed for some really fun sight fishing. When sight fishing longer casts and more delicate presentations are crucial. So practice your casting before you get in the boat.
The snook have been coming out of their winter holds and we’re starting to see them in groups along the flats. Redfish and Seatrout have been cooperating nicely. Resdient tarpon have been showing themselves again on the warmer days. I’ve seen a decent increase in the number of redfish in the lagoon this season.
My best fly patterns have been small baitfish imitation in black and purple as well as white, small shrimp patterns in tan.My best artificials have been z-man paddle tails in new penny and pearl. I’ve also been doing well on NLBN mini mullet in twisted T and fresh mullet.
I have been doing less bait fishing recently as most of my clients have been throwing the fly around. But the days I have been throwing bait it’s been mainly mullet. The mullet are starting become easier to find. Pilchard have been a little harder to find but the few times I have tried to find them I have. So, hopefully they will be little more consistent as we get into the heart of spring. With beginners shrimp is a must have. I’m either tipping my jigs with shrimp or ringing them weedless under a weight.
The fishing is going to get better and better with these warming trends. So, if you haven’t booked your trip for the spring you better get on it. Tight lines!
